Biography
I began my photographic ‘career’ aged 5 - on a family holiday to Edinburgh - utilising toy binoculars held on end
as an imaginary camera!
After completing a B.Sc in Botany and Ecology, I turned some serious attention to photography and achieved second place in the Amateur Photographer of the Year award 1982 with some rudimentary studio shots. This spurred me to go professional in 1983 and head for the bright lights of London where I found that I had a natural flair for combining photography and graphic design.
Over the next six years I completed marketing and photography projects for a diverse range of clients from SME’s to blue chips from my studio in Camden Town.
A move to the Scottish Borders in 1989 led to renovating cottages and building furniture and consequently founding a company to design and manufacture freestanding kitchen and bookcase furniture. After 16 years successful trading, we closed this business at the end of 2009 due to the effects of the recession and the near impossibility of keeping a small manufacturing business going in the current UK climate. Our retail business
Avery Homestore in Edinburgh - providing useful and unusual home and gift ideas sourced from the UK and Europe.
Having transferred to digital photography in 2001 after a lifetime in 35mm, medium format and large format, I found the natural companion to my Apple Mac fixation and freedom from the pains of film processing. Years of darkroom experience developing and printing black and white and colour film made a natural transition to the facilities afforded by software.
Over the last few years I have gradually rediscovered that I am truly a photographer at heart and returned to my original passion for landscape work with the addition of a special interest in wildlife. With the wisdom of age, I am just doing what I enjoy rather than trying to make a living or reputation! Please enjoy the website.
